All-season tyres;
All-season (all-weather) tyres cover summer and mild winter conditions with a single set. They trade a little peak performance in each season for the convenience of never swapping wheels. Here is when that trade-off makes sense in Croatia, and when dedicated tyres still win.
What is an all-season tyre?
An all-season tyre uses a compound and tread pattern tuned to stay usable across a wide temperature range, from summer heat to light winter cold. It is a compromise: safer than a summer tyre in snow, but not as sharp as a true winter tyre in deep cold, nor as precise as a summer tyre on a hot, dry road.
When all-season makes sense in Croatia
All-season tyres fit best in mild coastal regions (Dalmatia, Istria, Kvarner) where heavy snow is rare and most driving is in town. For continental winters with real snow and ice (Gorski kotar, Lika, inland highlands), a dedicated winter tyre is still the safer choice. Low annual mileage and a second city car are classic all-season candidates.
Winter-law compliance: M+S vs 3PMSF
Under Croatian rules, winter equipment is required from 15 November to 15 April or whenever winter conditions are present. An all-season tyre counts as winter equipment only if it is marked, and the 3PMSF (three-peak mountain snowflake) symbol is the meaningful one. Plain M+S alone is no longer sufficient. Check the sidewall for the snowflake before relying on all-seasons in winter.
All-season vs dedicated tyres
- One set all year - no seasonal swap, no storage, no changeover cost.
- 3PMSF-marked all-seasons satisfy the Croatian winter-equipment requirement.
- Longer braking on hot dry roads than a summer tyre, and on snow and ice than a true winter tyre.
- Often wear a little faster and can be noisier than a matched seasonal tyre.

FAQ
Are all-season tyres legal for winter in Croatia?
Yes, if they carry the 3PMSF (snowflake) marking. Plain M+S is no longer enough on its own. With the snowflake, an all-season tyre counts as winter equipment from 15 November to 15 April.
Are all-season tyres a good idea for the coast?
For mild coastal regions with rare snow and mostly city driving, yes - they remove the seasonal swap with little downside. For inland winters with real snow and ice, dedicated winter tyres remain safer.
Do all-season tyres wear out faster?
Often slightly, and they can be a touch noisier, because the compound is a compromise across temperatures. For low annual mileage this rarely matters; for high mileage, separate summer and winter sets can be more economical over time.
