Tyres by size;
Every tyre carries three numbers on the sidewall that describe exactly how it fits your car: width, aspect ratio and rim diameter. Once you know them, finding a replacement takes seconds.
What does 205/55R16 mean?
The standard format. Three numbers + a letter, printed on the tyre sidewall:
- 205 - tyre width in millimetres (measured sidewall to sidewall when inflated).
- 55 - aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width). 55% of 205 mm = 112.75 mm sidewall.
- R - radial construction. Virtually every modern passenger tyre is R.
- 16 - rim diameter in inches. This must match your wheel exactly.
The main size is usually followed by a load index (e.g. 91) and a speed index (e.g. V). We cover those in a separate guide.
Where to find your tyre size
- On the existing tyre's sidewall - the safest source.
- In the owner's manual under "factory tyre sizes".
- On the driver door jamb sticker (with recommended pressures).
- On our vehicles page - pick make, model and year to see OEM and alternative sizes.
Searching by size - how
On the Tyres page you have two paths:
- Dropdowns - pick brand, season, width, ratio and rim. Each selection cascades - combinations that yield zero hits are never offered.
- Quick input - type a combination like
205+55+16,205/55R16,205 55 16or225/45R17. Press Enter and the size becomes a chip that filters results instantly.
You can stack multiple sizes - e.g. 205+55+16 and 205+60+16 - to compare options side by side.
Can I fit a different size?
Sticking to the OEM size from the owner's manual is always safest. Manufacturer-approved alternatives keep total tyre diameter within ±3% so the speedometer stays accurate and suspension geometry isn't disturbed.
Our vehicles page lists OEM and alternative sizes alongside factory load and speed indices. Pick a tyre below those ratings and the card flags it red.
